Horizon Europe and the Green Deal

Horizon Europe is the European Union’s flagship funding program for research and innovation with a total budget of EUR 95.5 billion. The European Green Deal is a central element of this program. It will provide clear pathways to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while fostering growth and providing a competitive advantage for European industries. Horizon Europe also encourages a stronger involvement of citizens. This highlights the need for new communication tools to convey the potential of research as enabler of societal change.

EU Green Deal and Mission Areas

Horizon Europe addresses global societal challenges through “missions” with clearly defined targets, for example in the health and environmental sectors. webLyzard technology is an Austrian SME with extensive experience in these sectors. Participating in 7th Framework Programme and Horizon 2020 projects helped to build and continuously extend a large-scale Web intelligence and visual analytics platform. International sustainability applications have demonstrated the unique capabilities of this platform. Our team developed the semantic search for the US Climate Resilience Toolkit of NOAA Climate.gov, for example, and the SDG Intelligence dashboard for the United Nations Environment Programme.

Added Value to Horizon Europe Projects

Based on a strong track record and its extensive portfolio of information services, webLyzard can add value to different types of Horizon Europe projects – RIA, IA, CSA – in several roles (please get in touch via email or this online form to discuss a planned submission):

• Technology Partner. We regularly collaborate in EU Research and Innovation Actions (RIAs) or Innovation Actions (IAs) to jointly advance the state of the art in our core R&D areas. These areas include e.g. semantic data integration, visual analytics as well as the extraction of knowledge from online channels and big data archives. We extract both factual and affective knowledge from these sources. Named entity detection, for example, aligns documents with events stored in a knowledge graph. Opinion mining then sheds light on the sentiment and human emotions expressed in the public debate about these events.
• Data Provider. We operate a comprehensive content processing stack. A scalable Web crawler, for example, captures the Web sites of news organizations, companies and NGOs. In addition, separate modules ingest user-generated content from forums and online communities. Complementing such Web sources, we also collect content from various social media platforms.
• System Integrator. A flexible Application Programming Interface (API) captures data streams from many different sources. The API allows integrating components across tasks and work packages, leveraging our highly scalable platform (databases, triple stores, distributed caching, etc.)
• Dissemination and Communication. Our communication success metrics and content optimization tools go far beyond traditional dissemination instruments. They help to maximize the impact among citizens and professional stakeholder alike. Frequently, our work also includes managing the project’s social media channels. The creative part is either covered by our in-house team or our strategic partner, the communications agency Ketchum Publico.
