Short Biography
Prof Dr Arno Scharl is the Managing Partner of webLyzard technology, a Professor of Information Systems at the Research Center for New Media Technology of Modul University Vienna, and an Honorary Professor at the UCL Institute for Global Prosperity. Previously, he held professorships at the University of Western Australia and Graz University of Technology, and was a Visiting Fellow at the University of California at Berkeley after completing his doctoral research and habilitation at the Vienna University of Economics and Business.
Serving in various roles, including Coordinator and R&D Leader, Arno Scharl helped acquire and manage more than 30 European (FP7, Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe) and Austrian (FFG, WWTF) research projects. He has also led the development of a Web intelligence portal for global environmental indicators and related communication flows for UN Environment, the visual search for the Climate.gov site of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as well as the Austrian SDGHUB, an AI-based knowledge aggregator to address the socio-ecological challenges of reaching the SDGs of the Agenda 2030 and the climate mitigation goals of the Paris Agreement.
Prof. Scharl has authored more than 200 refereed publications and edited two books in Springer‘s Advanced Information & Knowledge Processing Series (The Geospatial Web, Environmental Online Communication). His current research focuses on SDG open-source intelligence, visual analytics, AI-based impact metrics, information visualization and the integration of semantic & geospatial technology.
